![]() Converting People to LinuxWe who are the users of Linux want the whole world to use Linux. Those of us who use Ubuntu seem to want it more than anyone else. To be honest it's not hard to get Ubuntu out there, or Linux in general. Pimping Ubuntu is probably the best way to start it. I'm sorry I'm not being biased. I feel Ubuntu is the ultimate for regular home use. It's super easy to customize. I found it easier to get to look exactly how I want, even easier than SuSe. I really loved SuSe for it's customization, but I felt Ubuntu was better. So let me guess. You have talked your friends' ears off about converting to Linux. None of them have wanted to convert yet. Some seem interested but totally unsure about converting over. Well, you are totally trying to convert the wrong people. Convert your mother, father, aunt, uncle, or even your grandparents. Yes grandparents are avid emailers and web surfers these days. If all they are doing is playing solitaire, and emailing constantly then go and offer them something better than Windows. Tell them their start up will be faster, and the programs wont run as slow. They will probably let you go on from there and put Linux on their machines. Remember to promise them you will fix any computer problems they have. Even though they shouldn't have any if they are just surfing and playing solitaire. Next from there try to convert your brothers and sisters. If they don't do anything with their job from home. Tell them they will be able to keep their computer longer if they use Linux on the computer. This appeals to a lot of people. Also if they have separate computers from their kids. Put Linux on the Children's machine. Let them get used to it. Most of the time kids are just playing flash games on line anyway. So it makes no difference. Now there is a problem with kids. Especially when they are at around the age of 9 or 10. They like the PC Game thing. I suggest that when they are at that age you better know how to set up emulators for Windows, or else you just lost a Linux user for life. They will hate it for the rest of their life and tell the world how much they hate Linux. Why? Because they couldn't play the games on it that they wanted. You know how kids can be. Another thing you can do is make sure your own children are using Linux. Remember your own family is key. Once families are using Linux, it will grow. The idea that it is free is a wonderful thing to a lot of people. The idea that it wont slow down as bad as Windows is another good thing. Honestly Windows slows down for 2 main reasons. The directory gets all mixed to confusion and malware/spy-ware make the computer slow down a lot too, no matter how often you run anti-spy-ware programs. Let me make my disclaimer though. Before Vista I wouldn't have said Linux is better than Windows... even though it helped to get someone to use Linux, it's a great thing to say. I wouldn't have said Windows is better than Linux either. Both operating systems have their good and bad sides. There is no denying that. I myself personally always enjoyed Linux much more. I like my freedom, I like the quality of the OS (especially Ubuntu's quality), and I like the fact that I don't have to pay for anything. Since Vista has came out though, there have been many more technical reasons why I prefer Linux over Windows. It's still about preference and choices though. That is what Linux is about is choice. That is what the Ubuntu Pimp is about is choice. I will show you a different world if I can, and show you what you can choose so that way you don't feel you have to just do what everyone else is doing. Life is about choices and being yourself, not being robots and using things and liking things just because everyone else is. So, to finish off the blog. The best place to start when it comes to converting and getting people to use Linux is within your own family. Don't stop there, talk to everyone you can about it. Anytime computer discussions come up. Right now there are 3 professionals out there that people corner at parties and talk about their problems. Doctors, Mechanics, and Computer people. So go do your thing. Don't be afraid. If someone says no, that is fine. Go on to the next person. There are plenty of people to talk to about Ubuntu. Did I just make this sound like converting people to a religeon or something? .....I do believe I did. There you have it folks. Ubuntu The New Religeon...I'm going to hell for that one I know... |
