Dell Selling Open Source

Great news for all of us who want to buy a desktop computers without Windows already installed. Dell has a series called the"N Series". They are offering their standard cheap price, medium price, and more expensive price; with the cheapest being the C521 as the cheapest, E521 as the mid price, and the E520 as the higher end model. They still offer the ability to configure them, so you can add on whatever you wish to them.

I find this to be a pretty good deal. I'm not really sure how much the price difference really is....I didn't go in to check to be honest. I just think it's nice that the hard drive is unformatted and we can do whatever we wish to it, which is always wonderful for me. I went ahead and configured the E520 to my pimp standards and this is what I got:

PROCESSOR - Pentium D Processor 820 with Dual CoreTechnology (2.80GHz,800FSB)

OPERATING SYSTEM - FreeDOS included in the box, ready to install

MEMORY - 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz- 4DIMMs

HARD DRIVE - 250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache

OPTICAL DRIVE - 16x DVD+/-RW Drive

MONITORS - 22 inch E228WFP Widescreen Digital Flat Panel

VIDEO CARD - 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache

SOUND CARD - Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

SPEAKERS - Dell A225 Speakers

KEYBOARD & MOUSE - Dell USB Keyboard

FLOPPY & MEDIA READER - 13 in 1 Media Card Reader and 3.5 in Floppy Drive

MODEM - 56K PCI Data Fax Modem

All together this price at the moment came to be $1,379. I think that is pretty fair due to the fact that I went with 4 gigs of Ram.

Still, what I want to say is this. It really seems there has been a large push for Open Source in the computer world recently. It has really been a big issue. For me I've always loved Open Source. The idea of free, and free to grow in a natural world is wonderful. I'm sorry a tomato is much better for you when it has been grown out in a field as compared to inside a laboratory. The same goes with Open Source.

Anyway, getting back to what I wanted to say. The whole entire world for Linux is growing. The same with MAC, and the same for other Open Source operating systems. Still it seems Linux is having the largest growth, which means Open Source is growing. In the past month I've pimped Ubuntu to 3 more people. All it took was some explaining to the people what was going on with Vista, Open Source, and the growth of Ubuntu and other Linux distros.

This is why I say, get out there and tell the world. Many of us are doing it already. I know every chance I get, I speak about Ubuntu. Now is the perfect time, we are at a crucial point, we have to keep pushing, we have to keep speaking. The world knows Microsoft isn't the best out there it's just the easiest. Anyone who says Microsoft is the best should die. The reason being is all of these operating systems have pros and cons. Each operating system is stronger in one way and weaker in another. Yet, I only found Microsoft better in 2 ways compared to the others. It has more commercial support, and it's easier to use....almost.

Recently I have found the new MAC O/S is much easier to use than it used to be. It's really close to Windows in that respect. Maybe the next version it will be easier to use compared to Windows, which will make Windows only have one thing going for it....commercial support. Which to me, means nothing.

Anyway go out there and buy things that support Open Source, get away from commercialism, and you might find that the guys giving commercial support have no choice but to lower prices and make it a bit more bearable for us normal humans who have no money....such as myself.
