Feisty Fawn

Well, it is official. Feisty Fawn 7.04 has been released. Why is the Ubuntu Pimp so late on announcing this? Well the reason is, I don't like to upgrade on the first day. So far my experience with it has been nothing less than frustrating. So I wait a few days to upgrade. Now you are wanting to know why it has taken me about 5 days to say something. Well, I just wanted a few days to play with it. I have taken some small steps in trying to break it, hack it, and do fun little things like that of course. So now I will report to you exactly what I feel, and what I have learned.

I'm very happy with Feisty Fawn 7.04. Almost everything that was wrong with Edgy seems to have been fixed. A lot of things weren't working for me in Edgy...well they weren't working how I wanted them to work. There were a few things that weren't working at all since I freshly installed Edgy a few weeks ago.

For example, Amarok wasn't working at all. I loved Amarok, I've loved it since I first used it back in October. I found my favorite online radio station there. So I love Amarok because of this, not to mention I love how it functions, it was perfect for me. Well, when I installed it earlier this month it just wouldn't work. I had to use Exaile. Don't get me wrong Exaile is great, but it's not Amarok. So I just wasn't feeling happy with what was going on. When I upgraded to Feisty it totally worked for me. I tried Amarok right away to see if everything fixed, and sure enough it did.

Other things fixed as well, and plenty of things are working better. It seems GParted is more of my friend now. Not to mention the wireless manager seems to be a bit better... yet I'm still not happy with it. I'll talk about that later.

So far, while trying to break the system, I did a pretty good job at that. The cool thing is I burnt a Feisty Fawn ISO to DVD last week so I'm pretty happy with how easy it is to both upgrade through the command line, and how easy it is to install on disk.

I think I finally have some good comparisons down now, especially after using 4 different versions of Ubuntu in my life. Dapper Drake was the first real contender for home use. Sure you can say the ones before it were, but I don't know... Breezy was the first one I tried and it had some issuses. When Dapper came out I'd totally say it was on par with Windows XP. When Edgy reared it's head into the world, I'd say it was on par with Windows Vista. Basically Edgy had a lot of issues that sucked, and no matter how many patches were tossed out there, it still smelled like Poo Cloud...yet I wouldn't say it's stench was as bad as Vista.

Now, we got Feisty. From what I can tell at the moment. Feisty is beyond anything that has been done in Ubuntu before. It's really a work right out of the box type of OS. I'd say that it is beyond Vista in a lot of ways. Which it is OK if anyone wants to disagree with me. This is just my opinion based on little facts here and there that I have come across. I mean I thought Edgy was better than Vista.

Anyway, I just want to name a couple of things that I found to be wrong with Feisty. The first thing is the wireless manager. It still doesn't pick up all the wireless networks that the Windows manager can. I'm not sure why that is, but at least it does pick up better than when I was using Edgy. The other thing I don't like, and this has been my complaint for a while. Beryl broke on the upgrade. Now I'm not sure if this is Ubuntu's fault or Beryl's fault. All I'm saying is something really needs to be done about this. The other thing is video game support. Unfortunately it is still a pain to get the games running like I'd want them to.

Other than this all I can say is that Feisty Fawn is really awesome. I'm still trying to figure it out, but I'm thinking that it might just be ready for home use by computer illiterate people. So, I think what needs to be done is have people try it on their family and see what happens.
